Alright, since our guest DJ (DJ D4T4KLY5M) got iced in and couldn't make it out of Birmingham for our last Thursday Therapy we are having a special repeat event (well... I guess it's not a repeat really, but... it kind of is... sooo... whatever!)!

Birmingham's very own, DJ D4T4KLY5M, will be joining us!

If you're from out of town (not from the Huntsville/Decatur area) you get in for FREE!

AND we have an oh-so-loverly drink special to boot!

Regardless if you like to just hangout, have a drink and talk, or shake your stuff out on the dance floor, come out! Come out! Come out!

Besides, it's Thursday night - what else do you have to do?

10:44 am - Bar 109 Presents: Thursday Therapy, December 2nd - Huntsville, AL

Thursday Therapy is upon us once more! This Thursday, December 2nd, join us at Bar 109 in Huntsville, AL for an evening of good music and great people!

Here's a note by DJ joy_actual from his FB about this month's Thursday Therapy:

"So there are only two guys who have been doing this in Alabama longer than Jon (DJ naught) and I... Coyote J and Ben (DJ Adrakhonic).

Coyote J is a dick, so we didn't ask him to come and DJ; however, Ben is not a dick. Ben happens to be an awesome guy and damn good DJ!

So whether or not you're an old head (Sacrament, Dissonance, Paradox, or Blackout) or someone completely new to the scene, you owe it to yourself to see DJ Adrakhonic.

We simply don't want you to live with the regret of not being there. Think of it as an early xmas present to yourself :) "

10:42 am - My candidacy, for what it's worth...

Yep, I'm a write-in candidate for Governor of Alabama. Civil liberties are personal property rights, and personal property rights are civil liberties.

3:44 pm - Halloween is almost here!

This year's Witches Ball will be October 23, 7 p.m. - 2 a.m. at Rogues Tavern and Das Haus.

For more information, visit the Witches Ball website.

If you haven't been to the Witches Ball before, it's really worth checking out. There's never a cover and there's plenty of music and dancing. This year the organizers are expecting over 1,000 people.

I can hardly wait!

12:21 pm - Spooky Road Trip!

A friend and I are interested in visiting ghost towns and haunted places in the southeast. We're based in Birmingham, Alabama and don't mind a bit of a drive.

Does anyone know of anything in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi or Florida?

2:02 pm - Mayoral Vote is TOMORROW, December 8TH!

Mayoral Special Election is TOMORROW, December 8TH!

^ The Birmingham News's compiled candidate profiles. There's usually a voter's guide in the printed paper, but I didn't see it in today's copy? (Though since I was rifling through the copy at work, its possible there was one and someone else took it.)

I, um, actually just realized this past weekend that the vote is Tuesday, so I thought I'd post in case anyone else was just as far out of the loop as I tend to be. :P (Of course, my "not being in the loop" may be directly correlated to my habit of "not watching TV" so if everyone else has been inundated already, I apologize for the duplication.

8:39 am - B'ham based sewing group?

I sew. An odd thing to confess in a public group, but necessary.

I'd like to find a local sewing buddy, sewing stitch'n'bitch group or sewing studio as I need a second set of hands to help with some fitting and tailoring. It's for myself - kind of hard to do some kinds of pinning when you're wearing the stuff.

Anyone have any suggestions?

12:23 pm - dogs in need of help.

I received this email today and had to pass along. Even if you can give $5 it would help so much. Please pass on to anyone you know who may be able to help. Thanks.

I know everybody is hurting right now because of the recession. However, this Mama dog almost died, ‎already, raising her litter of five. She had given every ounce of strength she had to them. She is sooo ‎loving and sooo desires someone just to love her back. Her heartworm infestation is heavy and I fear for ‎her. This, however, is the only way she can live.‎
‎ ‎
This is an ADAR Rescue dog in Tuscaloosa, AL. This treatment is coming on the heels of several large ‎surgeries. The expense of which they solely have had to bear. It never stops because tomorrow they ‎are having to have the leg removed on a 6 mo. old pup who was in a car accident with his "Dad". The ‎little fellow, named Buck, came thru the wreck with only a broken front leg . . . but his Dad died as the ‎result of the wreck. Amy w/ ADAR has taken the little fellow in and the leg was pinned, at first, but it is ‎not healing so the leg is going to have to be removed. Lord only knows what that will cost.‎
‎ ‎
So, the $300.00 from this Fundable is going to be really important to ADAR being able to continue with ‎Mama's heartworm treatment. Donated funds that ADAR has right now may have to be diverted to pay ‎for emergency surgery on Buck. Mama is a precious, unselfish girl who deserves a life of her own some ‎day . . . and should not be forgotten or have to play "second fiddle" for any reason.‎
‎ ‎
Thank you for anything you can do to help. Crossposting will be GREAT, too.‎
‎ ‎
Here is the Fundable addy:‎
‎ ‎
If you would prefer to contribute a little something to Buck's surgery, instead . . .just visit ‎ . They have pay pal, too. Again, thank you for caring.‎

10:57 am - History of Birmingham Public Transit?

Another questions for you wonderful people.

I'm going to be using the local bus service for some of my travel needs to and from UAB. I've used it a couple of times, and, well, it's pretty minimal.

I come from a city where I didn't need a car (why own when you can rent for out-of-town trips and use your bike or the local frequent service for shopping trips? It's cheaper... and you can easily rent a truck when you need one.) and am not keen to own here. I need the exercise I get on my bike.. and well, I can rent when I'm going out of town.

But why, oh why, is transit service so light here? Does it have anything to do with refusal by users to ride during the civil rights fight era? Is it do with local governance structures?*

Any pointers to local history sources regarding this?

*My understanding is that the Alabama State Consitution makes it very difficult to alter local state law regarding how things are funded.

11:45 am - B'ham shopping question

G'day again.

Another B'ham question for you good souls. (and thanks for the local recycling and enviromental info!)

I have large feet. I'm female. Can anyone point me to local retailers who are likely to be carrying womens 11A (narrow) shoes? I'm specifically looking for some ballet flats, flip flops and Asic brand running shoes.

10:10 am - New to Alabama - with a question

I've just moved to B'ham from Toronto for a wee bit of mid-life retooling aka school.

In Toronto, due to limited landfill capacity, we had/have a comprehensive recycling program.
Plastics, glass and paper were sorted out for reuse, we had a city wide compostables pick-up program that was just being extended to the highrises and there were regular toxic waste pickup days for old electronics, batteries, paint and other nasties.

But here, I'm having difficulty finding same here. And I feel _very_ guilty about the sheer volume of trash that we're tossing as a result, not to mention used battery disposal.

I've searched the city website for leads, but have found nada.

I'm a couple of weeks away from setting up a vermiposter in our apartment and we're taking all newspaper to my husband's favourite organization, the humane society. But I'd feel less guilty if we were doing more.

Can anyone in the Magic City community tell me about or point me to existing recycling programs???
